At this point, Ryan and I have owned the store for one month shy of a year and by now I have noticed there are several frequently asked questions to be expected almost every day. Things like:
Q: Is this a library? A: We're a retail store! You get to keep your books forever if you want to!
Q: What did this place used to be?? A: Before it was Twice Told Tales, this building was McPherson Floral! And before that, going back to when McPherson was founded, this spot on Main Street has been different iterations of drug stores and pharmacies!
Q: Do you sell audiobooks? A: No.
Or at least that used to be my answer! Now I can happily say that we've been selling high quality audiobooks for the past month!
It's a little different--you don't come into the store and browse through what we have like when you're shopping for a physical book. Nope! It can all be done through libro.fm.
Libro.fm is a really cool service that exists to help audiobook listeners support the independent bookstores that they love so much! I've been short-hand explaining it this way: Right now when you download an audiobook from Audible, Amazon.com makes money. If you switch to ordering your audiobooks through Libro.fm/twicetoldtales, then we'll make money that we'll put back into our business and this incredible community!
And if you subscribe to libro.fm's monthly subscription service and use the offer code SWITCH at the check out, you'll get three free audiobooks!
There are so many things to love about our partnership with Libro.fm but here are a couple of my favorites:
1. You don't have to be in our store or even in McPherson to help support our store! If you live out of town but you believe in the mission of Twice Told Tales, you can sign up and support us! When you set up your account, make sure that you select Twice Told Tales as your preferred store and we'll make a cut of every purchase that you make. And we'll feel warm fuzzies when we think of you.
2. Audiobooks make reading accessible for people who aren't able to read in the traditional sense. Whether someone has sight issues, dyslexia, attention issues, or simply don't have the time or desire to sit and read, audiobooks can make reading fun again!
3. It's something the whole family can enjoy together. When we go on road trips, picking an audiobook to listen to in the car together is one of my favorite parts. A few years ago, we drove to New Orleans and back while listening to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Other, good for the whole family audiobooks that I recommend are, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder (the narration on this one is top notch), and Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond series--it's a brand new, super great middle grade fantasy series for fans of the Percy Jackson series.
For a grownups only road trip, I can't recommend Kindred by Octavia Butler enough. I was hooked from the very first sentence and I never wanted it to end. Except I also needed it to end because this book is powerful and will leave you feeling so many things.
**bonus** If you're the kind of person who likes to read brand new books, like me, this is a DREAM! You can get in deep into something brand new while driving to work or folding your laundry. Honestly, audiobooks are the only reason I ever get my laundry folded. Haha!
I've loved Audiobooks for years and I'm excited that a partnership like this exists! Thanks to everyone who has signed up with a Libro.fm/twicetoldtales account already and if you're thinking about it right now--thank you as well. We couldn't do what we do without people like you who want to support us in any way possible.
