There aren't a lot of downsides to owning and operating your own bookstore but I can tell you about one challenge that I do battle constantly.
I mean, look, I LOVE to recommend a book. I have so many books that I'd love to put into people's hands. Books that made me laugh my face off. Books that brought me to tears. Books that kept me up all night long, "just one more chapter and then I'll go to bed." And I really, really love it when someone comes in and says, "I don't know. Just surprise me!"
But at a used bookstore where every book is brought in by the generous folks in our beautiful community, I don't have a whole lot of control over the stock that we carry. Which means that, believe it or not, I haven't actually read each one of the thousands of books on our shelves (I get asked this question every day and sometimes people are genuinely shocked to find that I haven't read them all). And for the books I have read and loved? Well... I recommend it to someone, they buy it, and then it's gone! We have duplicates of some books but no more than one or two backups. All that to say, sometimes it's just hard to keep up!
But don't you worry! We've got solutions!
Solution Number One: Blind Date with a book is back!! This is an ideal situation for those of you who just want to be surprised. You're not picky. You just want something new to read. For you, we have a basket of books wrapped in paper with just a few words written on them to give you an idea of what you're getting into. Each package has two books inside. Adult packages are $10 and Middle Grade books are $5.
Solution Number Two: If you see a book on our shelves that you loved, write up a recommendation! We have cards to help with it. Sometimes it can be easy to remember that you loved a book but hard to remember exactly why. So to help you along, these cards have key-words you can circle to get your brain working. And everyone who fills out a card about a book that's currently on our shelves gets BOGO coupon for their next visit! Everyone wins!
Next time you're in the store, check out our display that is full of books that come highly recommended by people in the community. You'll probably find your next favorite!
